EPA has taken steps intended to reduce the operational impact of certain DEF system failures and encourage more repair-friendly system designs and software. But DEF and SCR systems are still part of the emissions system, faults still require diagnosis, and EPA's July 2026 changes for model year 2027 and later heavy-duty engines are proposals unless and until finalized.
What Has EPA Actually Changed About DEF Problems?
In August 2025, EPA published revised guidance addressing DEF-related inducements—the warnings and performance restrictions that can follow certain emissions-system faults. EPA said the guidance was developed with manufacturers to reduce sudden and severe operational impacts while still requiring repair.
EPA described a more gradual approach for heavy-duty vehicles covered by the guidance. Instead of moving quickly from a warning to a severe speed restriction, the guidance allows a longer warning period and a staged response intended to give operators additional time to reach service and make repairs.
EPA followed with additional DEF-related actions in 2026, including guidance concerning DEF sensor strategies. Those actions can give manufacturers additional compliance options and may support software or system changes on applicable equipment.
Important: Guidance does not automatically update every truck.
Whether a specific truck is eligible for a software change—and exactly how its inducement strategy behaves—depends on the engine, vehicle, model year, calibration, manufacturer, fault, and available updates. Truck owners should verify applicable updates by VIN or engine serial number rather than assuming a headline applies to every unit.
The Biggest 2026 Confusion: Proposed Rules vs. Final Rules
On July 9, 2026, EPA announced proposed amendments affecting model year 2027 and later heavy-duty highway engines, and the proposal was published by EPA on July 14. The proposal includes changes related to emissions-system compliance, useful-life and warranty provisions, and DEF-related requirements.
The key word is proposed. A proposed rule can change before it is finalized. Fleets should not make repair decisions based on the assumption that every proposed 2027 requirement is already law.

If a headline says EPA “eliminated DEF derates,” slow down and check the details. Current guidance may reduce or delay certain inducements, and EPA has proposed additional changes, but an active DEF/SCR fault still needs to be diagnosed and repaired.
Can a Truck Still Derate Because of a DEF or SCR Problem?
Yes. Trucks can still display DEF warnings, check-engine lights, SCR faults, inducement messages, countdowns, and reduced-power conditions. The exact response depends on the vehicle and fault strategy.
That is why a driver should never assume that a warning can be ignored because “EPA changed the rule.” Even if a truck has more time before a severe inducement, more time is best used to plan a diagnosis—not to postpone the repair until the truck is stranded or operating under a restriction.
What Can Cause DEF and SCR Warnings?
A DEF or SCR fault does not automatically mean “bad DEF” or a failed DEF sensor. Modern aftertreatment systems monitor several components and operating conditions, and one fault can have more than one possible cause.
Incorrect fluid, contamination, concentration concerns, crystallization, or delivery problems can affect system operation.
Sensor faults, wiring, connectors, power, grounds, and software can all contribute to sensor-related codes.
Upstream and downstream NOx sensor data is used to evaluate SCR performance. A sensor code still requires testing before replacement.
Pumps, heaters, lines, injectors, pressure, restrictions, leaks, and crystallization can affect dosing.
The SCR catalyst may not be achieving expected conversion, but the cause can involve dosing, sensors, exhaust conditions, engine performance, or the catalyst itself.
Harness damage, corrosion, poor connections, voltage issues, communication faults, and previous repairs can create repeat problems.
Why Proper DEF/SCR Diagnostics Still Matter
A diagnostic trouble code is a starting point—not permission to throw a part at the truck. Good diagnosis uses the code, live data, operating history, visual inspection, electrical testing, manufacturer procedures, and system testing to confirm the cause.
Depending on the complaint, a technician may need to review active and inactive fault codes, DEF quality and level data, NOx sensor readings, dosing pressure or command, temperature data, wiring and connector condition, power and ground, aftertreatment history, regen information, software/calibration information, and related engine performance concerns.
A sensor code does not always mean a bad sensor.
The code may be reporting a condition created by wiring, voltage, contamination, exhaust leaks, dosing problems, another sensor, system efficiency, or software. Confirming the cause before replacing parts helps prevent repeat failures and unnecessary expense.
What About “Right to Repair” and Independent Shops?
EPA has also been clarifying that the Clean Air Act should not be used as a reason to block lawful repair access. The agency's 2026 repair-access guidance focused heavily on nonroad equipment, while EPA's broader service-information rules have long required certain emissions-related service information and tools to be made available for motor vehicles and engines.
For truck owners, the practical takeaway is that lawful diagnosis and repair should be distinguished from emissions tampering. Repairing a failed component, performing authorized programming, or diagnosing an emissions fault is not the same thing as deleting or defeating required emissions controls.

What Should You Do If the DEF Light or Derate Warning Comes On?
- Do not ignore the message. Note the exact warning, countdown, lamps, and any change in power.
- Do not clear codes just to make the light disappear. Stored information can help diagnose the cause.
- Check the basics. Verify the DEF tank has the correct fluid and do not add questionable or contaminated product.
- Schedule diagnosis early. A truck that is still moving is easier to plan around than one that has reached a severe inducement.
- Ask about applicable software updates. Manufacturer updates may exist for certain engines or calibrations, but they must be verified for the specific unit.
- Fix the cause—not just the code. A correct repair should address the reason the fault occurred.
What the EPA Changes Mean for Fleet Maintenance
More time before a severe inducement can be valuable, but it should not become a reason to extend a known fault indefinitely. The best use of that additional operating window is to coordinate the driver, schedule service, verify parts or software needs, and reduce the chance of an emergency repair.
Fleets that track repeat aftertreatment faults by unit can also identify patterns involving sensors, wiring, DEF handling, duty cycle, idle time, maintenance practices, or specific engine families. That turns a regulatory change into a maintenance opportunity instead of simply another headline.

Did EPA eliminate DEF derates in 2026?
No. EPA has issued guidance intended to reduce the severity and timing of certain DEF-related inducements and has proposed additional rule changes. That is different from saying every DEF derate has been eliminated.
Does the new EPA guidance mean my truck has already been updated?
No. An EPA guidance document does not automatically reprogram every truck. Availability and applicability of updates depend on the manufacturer and the specific vehicle or engine.
Can I keep driving with a DEF warning?
The answer depends on the exact warning, fault, vehicle, and operating condition. If the truck is still operating, use that time to arrange diagnosis. A countdown or inducement message should be treated as a maintenance priority.
Can an independent repair shop diagnose DEF and SCR systems?
Independent shops can lawfully diagnose and repair emissions-system failures when they have the appropriate information, tools, and capabilities. Repair is different from tampering with or defeating emissions controls.
What if the code says NOx sensor or DEF quality?
That code identifies the system or condition the ECM detected; it does not always prove which part failed. Testing should confirm the root cause before parts are replaced.
