At the end of May, temperatures are getting ready to climb — and that means cooling systems are about to be put to the test.

A truck may seem fine in cooler weather, but when summer heat arrives, hidden cooling-system problems can quickly show up as overheating, weak cab A/C performance, loss of power, derates, and expensive repairs.

A Dirty Cooling Pack Can Cost More Than You Think

Your truck’s cooling pack is more than just the radiator. Depending on the truck, it may include the radiator, charge air cooler, A/C condenser, transmission cooler, and other stacked components that all depend on clean airflow.

When these components get plugged with dirt, bugs, chaff, road debris, oil film, field dust, or other debris, airflow is restricted. That trapped heat can stress multiple systems at once.

What Can Happen When the Cooling Pack Is Plugged?

A restricted cooling pack can create several problems that may not appear all at once. The truck may start with higher fan-on time or weaker A/C performance, then progress into heat-related complaints as outside temperatures rise.

The cooling fan is not free, either. When restricted airflow causes the fan to run more often, it uses horsepower that should be moving the truck down the road. That can quietly hurt fuel economy before the truck ever overheats.

Do Not Forget the Fan, Belts, Idlers, and Pulleys

Cooling-system preventive maintenance is not just about washing out a radiator. This truck also had broken and cracked fan blades — a serious risk.

If a fan comes apart at speed, it can cause catastrophic under-hood damage, including damage to the radiator, charge air cooler, A/C condenser, fan shroud, belts, hoses, and surrounding components.

A good inspection should also look at:

Small issues in May can become major failures in July. A cracked fan blade, weak belt tensioner, coolant leak, or partially plugged cooling pack can quickly become a road call, tow bill, missed delivery, or major repair.

The Cooling Pack Can Look Fine From the Outside

One of the biggest problems with cooling systems is that debris can get trapped between the layers of the cooling pack.

The front may not look terrible, but dirt and debris can be packed between the A/C condenser, charge air cooler, radiator, and transmission cooler. That restriction reduces airflow and causes the entire system to work harder.

Before replacing expensive parts, it pays to inspect the full cooling pack properly. A visual check from the outside may not be enough when the debris is trapped between components.

Signs Your Cooling System May Need Attention

• The truck runs warmer than normal in traffic, hills, or heavy loads
• The fan runs more often than usual
• The cab A/C works poorly when the truck is working hard
• The truck has visible dirt, bugs, chaff, or field debris in the cooling pack
• There are coolant leaks, low coolant, or coolant smell around the truck
• Belts show cracking, glazing, fraying, or abnormal wear
• The fan blades show cracks, missing material, or damage
